Deacon Melvin Thomas Obituary

Deacon Melvin Wilson Thomas attended the public schools of Port Arthur, Texas. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Air Force (USAF) where he faithfully and honorably served for eight years, including a stint in Vietnam. After leaving the USAF, he then worked with the United States Postal Services (USPS) for 29 years until his retirement.  After retirement, he worked at Mills Bible Bookstore. He enjoyed working there because it provided another avenue for him to share THE WORD with others. His stint as a school crossing guard for the Houston Independent School District (HISD) was another joy in his life. He loved protecting and interacting with the children.

His religious education began at Eastern Star Baptist Church in Port Arthur, Texas, where he first accepted the Lord and was baptized at an early age. He participated in many of the youth ministries there. After leaving home he attended chapel on the military bases. Once established in Houston, he and his family united with Mt. Ararat Baptist Church. He was ordained a deacon there and served faithfully for twenty years. After leaving, he united with Fallbrook Church. He was a member of the Adult Sunday School class, the Men’s Ministry, the Evangelism Team, “Go Get Um”, Bible study group and taught Vacation Bible School until his health would not permit him to continue. He fought a long and courageous battle with his illness; but always with faith, courage and dignity. He always knew and believed that God was still in control, no matter the circumstances.

He married his former classmate, Phyllis, and were blessed to share 55 years of marriage. They are the parents of two daughters, Erica (Dietrich) and Suzanne; and the grandparents of Gabrielle (Gabby) and Nikolas.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, children and grandchildren, a sister, Joyce (Willie), and a host of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in law, and many special friends.
