Doris Jones Obituary

Doris Jones entered this world in 1938. Being born and raised in Denton, Texas, Doris attended Fred Douglas Elementary and Fred Moore High School of Denton, TX. She received her B.S. Degree in Elementary Education and History from Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas. She earned her M.S. Degree–Reading Specialist from the University of Houston and her Certification in Learning Disabilities from Prairie View A & M University. She taught in Dallas ISD, Galveston ISD, and retired from the Houston ISD in 2004.

Doris served as a musician, beginning with the Sunday School, then all choirs for St. James AMEC, Denton, TX (Her home church); St. Paul (Whiterock) and Emmanuel in Dallas, TX; Evening Chapel, Grand Prairie, Reedy Chapel, Galveston, and Green Chapel in Houston, TX.

Doris was a member of Payne Chapel AME Church since 1984. She served as a Class Leader, Secretary of the Quarterly Conference, Member of the Hospitality Committee, and the Senior Ministry. She is a former member of the Senior Choir, Ladies-Aid, Local Lay President, Missionary Society at Payne Chapel, and served on the First Executive Board of the Elnita McClain Women’s Center. Doris was the Recording Secretary of the Tenth Episcopal District Lay Organization until her demise, served eight years on the General Board of the AMEC, Recording Secretary for the Texas Conference Lay, 1st V.P. Texas Conference Lay, and President of the Texas Conference Lay Organization for eight years. Doris was also a Delegate to General Conferences, Delegate to the CLO Biennial, Board Member of the CLEDC of the CLO.

Doris was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for forty-nine years. She served as Financial Secretary, a part of the Budget and Finance Committee while in Beta Phi Omega Chapter (Galveston). She was an active member of Xi Alpha Omega Chapter until her passing.

Doris loved to read, travel, and enjoyed retirement, but most of all she loved God. She was extremely grateful for having an opportunity to serve him through giving of time and service to her church and different organizations of the A.M.E. Church.

Sadly, on January 13, 2022, our beloved Doris passed away. She is survived by her children: Smedga (Gwen), Monita, and Arby (Josetti); six grandchildren: DeYonna, LaQuita, Jonte’, Simone, Arby II, and Jamia; two great-grandchildren: Kobe and Jada; two sisters: Muriel and Marcella; one brother, Jerome (Zella); one brother-in-law, Joseph, Jr. (Leilani); Godchildren: Rodrick and Brandon; The Ladybug Crew: Giselle, Emery, and Betty; Bonus family: Shari, Daryl (Euletha), and Drew; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
